Did you know, trend-setters push the color green at the end of a recession to remind people of money?

For the first time, The Word will have a fashion section this year. I've talked with Brenda Becknell, Lubbock fashionista and owner of the Robert Spence School of Modeling, and she gave me tons of tips that you're going to LOVE, at least I sure did. (And don't worry, guys, we didn't leave you out. There's plenty for everyone.)

The section I'm working on will feature easy tips for dressing up casual outfits. It will also include some fun trends for guys and gals, and also a section about how to dress professionally, for those of us whose college years are soon coming to a close. So get excited!

Also, we've been working on the "Top 10 Places to Lock Lips in Lubbock" poster for the Word, and it's looking fantastic so far. You'll definitely want one to put up on your wall. I've been working on Word magazine for a little over a month now, so now that I've actually made a dent in some of the articles I'll be writing, I think it would be a good time for me to divulge what you can expect to see in the fall when you pick up your Word.

Things to do in Lubbock. This was the first project I embarked on. Oh how well I remember my first year at Texas Tech, sitting in the hallways of the dorms wanting to rip my hair out because I was sooo bored. I'm not going to tell you what's in the article, but I will tell you some of the interesting things I learned while working on it.

Did you know that over half the local coffee shops in Lubbock have gone out of business in the past few years? Some Lubbock coffee bloggers blame it on the recession, but whatever the cause, it's practically a crime! Lubbock used to have so many great places to grab a quality cup.

But, did you know the Arrogant Texan serves coffee? And they can whip up a pretty durn good latte, if I may say so myself. The day I heard they serve all my favorite drinks, I just had to stop by for a cup and was pleasantly surprised.

Apple season starts up in a few days, July 6th! So get your baskets ready! Plus, did you know the Apple Orchards are open all-year-round? I had no idea.

Parking Know-How. This article was obviously a must because, and I'm being completely honest, I'd rather attend my own funeral then try to find a parking spot on Tech campus. And as a bonus, I even added in some tips on how you can get a ticket appealed. Seriously, check it out.

Volunteering in Lubbock. I've talked with one of my favorite people in the world, Brandi Schreiber, at the Volunteer Center in Lubbock, to give you all the know-how on how to help out your community. Did you know 13 percent of the Lubbock County population is functionally illiterate? Brandi is passionate about helping end the "cycle of poverty" in Lubbock by partnering up with an initiative called Education Matters. Find out more in the fall when you pick up your word!

Well fellow Red Raiders, I've got so much more in the works. So don't forget to check in for updates on what you'll be reading in the fall!

Bringing you the Word at Texas Tech,

Brittany Nunn

Hello and Welcome!

Hello Red Raiders!

Thanks so much for visiting our blog. Let me tell you a little about what we do here at Word Publications.

Word Publications has several useful tools for Tech students, and the best part is they're free! I mean come on, we're college students, we love free.

The Raider Reader. Let's be honest, shall we? The Texas Tech website is a pain in my lower-end to navigate. So, the Raider Reader basically works like a map to help you find your way. It's a handy little tool that lists just about everything you'll need to know about Tech campus and the Texas Tech website. Advisers, health and wellness, tutoring, cab services, etc.

The Word magazine is what we like to call a survival guide for Tech students. It contains informative and interesting articles to help you survive your college experience. (Written by yours truly, of course.) It includes tidbits like fun things to do in Lubbock, tips for parking on campus, and - my personal favorite - best places to lock lips in Lubbock. And bonus: in the back are TONS of fantastic coupons for Lubbock restaurants and shops!

Housing Guide. This little jewel is a valuable tool to help you find the apartment in Lubbock that is the best fit for you. It'll tell you the rates and fees of the complexes in Lubbock, as well as whether or not they allow pets, what utilities they include and how long their leases are.

Lubbock Map. Not only does this map aid the directionally challenged, but the "Places To Go & Things To Do" section along with colorful graphics suggest restaurants and shops you should visit. Plus, if you and your friends ever need a weekend-get-away to Ruidoso, New Mexico, we've got a map for that, too. (However, if you need someone to hold your hand down the slopes, you're on your own.)

You can pick any of these up in the SGA offices, and in the fall, the Word will be handed out on campus, so make sure you get yours!

-Brittany Nunn
